Soutelphan Ascends

Founded in 1960 by Mohamed Abdel Wahab and Abdel Halim Hafez, Soutelphan emerged as Sono Cairo’s primary rival.

Distinguished by their vivid silk-screened sleeves, Soutelphan records were part of a calculated star-making machine.

Though the label shared many artists with Sono Cairo, the two titans split their icons: Oum Kalthoum never recorded with Soutelphan, remaining firmly under Sono Cairo’s banner.

The rivalry between Wahab and Kalthoum ensured Soutelphan's artists received singular attention, often framed in reverent, almost mythologizing visuals.

These records are now prized for both their design and their role in shaping Egypt’s pop pantheon.
