About

This website is an online extension of Born in the City of Tanta: A Visual History of the Egyptian 45 (1958–1975), an exhibit curated by Gary Sullivan for Brian Gempp's Record Grouch. The exhibit runs from Saturday, June 7 through Saturday, June 28, 2025. Record Grouch is located at 986 Manhattan Ave, Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY 11222, and open every day from 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM EDT.

The exhibit takes its title from the Sublime Frequencies release Born in the City of Tanta: Lower Egyptian Urban Folklore and Bedouin Shaabi from Libya's Bourini Records 1968 - 75, compiled by Hisham Mayet and Gary Sullivan, and is a nod to Mohamad Fawzi, who launched the first vinyl pressing plant in Egypt in 1957.

Copies of the Sublime Frequencies release will be on sale at a reduced price during the opening launch (7:00 PM EDT June 7, 2025), which will include a presentation and DJ set of related Egyptian 45s by Gary. UPDATE: Copies will remain on sale throughout June or until they sell out, whichever comes first.

On the closing evening (Saturday, June 28) at 7:00 PM EDT, Dartmouth Senior Lecturer Andrew Simon will give a presentation on the history and impact of the cassette in Egypt, focusing on legendary composer-singer-oudist Sheikh Imam. Simon is the author of Media of the Masses: Cassette Culture in Modern Egypt, copies of which will be on hand for purchase during the event.
